The world’s oldest person, a 117-year-old Japanese woman, died on Saturday evening. Nabi Tajima, who had been in a hospital in southern Japan’s Kikai town since January, died of old age, town official Susumu Yoshiyuki said, according to AP.

Born on August 4, 1900, Tajima became the world’s oldest person after Violet Brown in Jamaica died in September. She was also 117 years old. Tajima was the last known person born in the 19th century.

According to the Gerontology Research Group, 116-year-old Chiyo Miyako, who is also Japanese, is now the world’s oldest person. She lives in Kanagawa prefecture south of Tokyo and will turn 117 on May 1.
