Mamata Banerjee says she had advised Congress against CJI impeachment motion
The Trinamool Congress leader said her party did not want to interfere in judicial matters.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said she had advised Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi against moving the impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra as it was wrong. In an interview to News18 Bangla, the Trinamool Congress leader said her party did not want to interfere in matters of the judiciary and had rejected the Congress’ request to support the motion.
On Monday, Rajya Sabha Chairperson Venkaiah Naidu dismissed the motion against Misra moved by the Congress and other Opposition parties on April 20. The motion had the support of 64 MPs from seven Opposition parties.
Naidu on Tuesday said he had rejected the impeachment motion after due diligence and did not make the decision in haste. The motion included five charges against the chief justice, but the Rajya Sabha chairperson dismissed them, saying the allegations were “mere suspicion, conjecture or an assumption”.
