Authorities in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district have ordered an inquiry and suspended two staff after a video showed men and women being examined for medical fitness for the constable’s post in the same room, PTI reported. The incident took place at a district hospital on Tuesday.

District authorities issued a show-cause notice to five doctors, including an ophthalmologist, a gynaecologist and an orthopaedic surgeon, who examined 21 men and 18 women in the same room before being inducted into the state police, the hospital’s superintendent Dr Ajit Mishra said.

The orthopaedic surgeon and a clerk were suspended for dereliction of duty, Mishra said. The clerk had sent the recruits together to the room instead of calling them inside one by one, he said.

A video clip had emerged showing men in their undergarments being examined in the presence of women. The room did not have female staff members.

The incident came days after candidates for the constable’s post in Madhya Pradesh’s Dhar district were reportedly labelled with their castes on their chests during a medical examination. The National Human Rights Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident.
