A deputy superintendent of police from South Kashmir on Thursday alleged that his home and shops in his locality in Anantnag were damaged by security forces. He also posted pictures of the same on his Facebook page.

“Vandalism by security forces at KP Road, Anantnag,” said Nisar Ahmad Bakshi. “Property worth lakhs including windows and window panes of my residential house damaged… Houses/vehicles and shops smashed and attacked by rods and rocks. This is for the eighth time since 2008 that my residential house has been damaged in such a way.”

The alleged attack took place on Wednesday after clashes in the area. Bakshi’s neighbour, Dr Iftikhar Ahmad, said more than 12 houses were damaged by the security forces. A police officer said they were looking into the matter. “We have sought a report,” he said.

Bakshi, who is currently posted with the State Human Rights Commission, said he would not have posted the pictures on Facebook if it was the first attack on his house. “I think this is the only way to make my plea reach the higher officials, the deputy commissioner,” he told The Indian Express. “Our house is just on the road. Whenever there is a protest in the area, the security forces damage our house, smash its windows.”

Others also condemned the alleged attack. “When the houses of police officers are ransacked in such a manner, imagine the fate of ordinary people,” wrote one of Bakshi’s Facebook friends. His brother, Dr Iftkhar Bakshi, called it hooliganism. “No accountability at all,” he said, according to Greater Kashmir. “At least someone from the district administration should take cognisance of such incidents. Mohalla committees should apprise the concerned SHO [station house officer] and other district admins so that there will be no such loss to the civilian property in future.”
