Actor-turned politician Rajinikanth on Sunday said that the outcome of the political wrangling after the Karnataka election results was a victory for democracy. “[The] BJP [Bharatiya Janata Party] asking for some more time and governor giving 15 days was a mockery of democracy,” he told reporters. “I would like to thank Supreme Court for its order, which upheld democracy.”

On Saturday, BJP leader BS Yeddyurappa resigned as the chief minister before a scheduled floor test in the Assembly. Governor Vajubhai Vala had invited the BJP, which won more seats than any other party, to form the government, although the Congress and its ally the Janata Dal (Secular) had more seats. The two parties, along with the Bahujan Samaj Party and two independents, have the support of 117 MLAs while the BJP has the support of 104 MLAs.

The Congress and the JD(S) to move the Supreme Court against Vala’s decision. The top court then asked Yeddyurappa to prove his majority in the Assembly.

When reporters asked Rajinikanth about his political plans, the actor-turned-politician said he would decide on contesting the 2019 Lok Sabha elections only after the poll dates are announced. “The party is not yet launched, but we are ready for anything,” he said. “Also, it is too early to talk about any kind of alliance.”

On December 31, Rajinikanth had announced he would launch a party and field candidates in all 234 constituencies in Tamil Nadu in the next Assembly elections. The actor also called for his fan clubs and the people of Tamil Nadu to join him in the “fight against corruption”. He launched a website and an Android application called “Rajini Mandram”, where people can register as members.
