Zinedine Zidane has announced his resignation from Real Madrid just days after the club clinched the third successive Champion’s League title.

The 45-year-old has won three Champions League titles since taking over from Rafael Benitez in 2016. During his stint at the Bernabeu, Zidane became the first manager in Champions League history to defend the trophy before adding a third consecutive win in Kiev last Saturday.

The former Real Madrid star called a surprise press conference on Thursday even as doubts swirled around his future as well as club superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.

“I have taken the decision to not continue next year as Real Madrid coach. After three years I need another discourse, another method of working,” he told a hastily convened press conference.

The 45-year-old has represented Real Madrid 155 times as player before taking over the B team, Castilla on his way to landing the manager post of the senior team.
