Bihar: Six children die after car plunges into a pond in Araria district
Rescuers managed to save one child.
At least six children died after the car they were travelling in fell into a pond at Sukhsaina village in Araria district of Bihar on Tuesday. Rescuers managed to save one child.
Tarabari Station House Officer Mahboob Alam said that the deceased were identified as Uneet Kumar, Naina Kumari, Karan Kumar, Mithun Kumar, Ajay Kumar and Nitesh Rishidev, The Times of India reported. “Uneet and Naina are siblings, while rest were from different families. All of them were travelling in the ill-fated SUV,” he said.
Alam said that the car was completely submerged in the water. He added that the children who died were between the ages of six and 15. The rescued child was identified as Monu Kumar. All the minors were from Boriyare village under Bounsi police station in the district.
“The incident took place when a child suddenly came in the middle of the road, and to save the child, the driver applied brakes,” the station house officer said. “Following this, he lost control over the car, which collided into a tree and fell into the pond.” The children were on their way back from a marriage ceremony at Chinki village in Araria.
“The driver of the SUV fled the spot and the police are trying to ascertain his identity,” Alam said. He added that the children’s bodies have been sent for a postmortem examination.
