The Madhya Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested a 20-year-old man for allegedly abducting, sexually assaulting and attempting to kill an eight-year-old girl in Mandsaur district, The New Indian Express reported.

Police identified the man as Irfan alias Bhaiyyu Mev, who was tracked using footage retrieved from a CCTV camera located between the girl’s school and the spot where she was found among bushes in Lakshman Gate locality on Wednesday afternoon. The child had gone missing from her school in Hafiz Colony on Tuesday.

Mandsaur Superintendent of Police Manoj Singh told ANI that the child had sustained severe injuries, but her condition was said to be stable. She was referred to Indore for further treatment.

Protestors gathered on the streets in Mandsaur city on Wednesday, seeking capital punishment for the accused, reported The Times of India. Singh told the newspaper that protestors hurled stones at buses on Tuesday night. “We have registered cases against the perpetrators,” he said.

He said police have been stationed in sensitive areas and are watching out for inflammatory posts on social media posts. “Three to four cases have been registered against people posting inflammatory material,” Singh said.

Several schools in the city declared a holiday on Thursday, anticipating further protests.
