The India Meteorological Department on Monday forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across the country till Friday. The warning comes after the Met department said last week that the southwest monsoon had covered the entire country, 17 days ahead of its normal onset date.

The weather department has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places in Uttarakhand, East Uttar Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya till Tuesday.

According to the IMD, “heavy rain” translates to 64.5mm to 124.4mm on a single day while “very heavy rain” means 124.5 mm to 244.4 mm. “Extremely heavy rain” refers to 244.5 mm or more recorded in a single day.

Heavy to very heavy rain with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Bihar, Assam and Meghalaya on Monday. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Konkan region, Goa, coastal Karnataka, and Odisha through this week.

Besides, heavy rainfall has also been predicted for north Haryana and Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep, Jammu and Kashmir, central Maharashtra, Gujarat region, interior Karnataka, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, among other places.
