Iran will discuss future of nuclear deal with five world powers in Vienna, says state media
The negotiations to protect the deal come nearly two months after the United States withdrew from the agreement.
Iran’s foreign minister will meet representatives of five world powers to discuss the future of the nuclear deal in Vienna, Reuters quoted the Iranian news agency IRNA as reporting on Tuesday. The announcement follows the withdrawal of the United States from the accord on May 8. The negotiations will focus on how to keep the deal alive.
Trump decided to withdraw from the agreement signed by the five permanent members of the United Nations, Germany, the European Union and Iran during former US president Barack Obama’s tenure. The agreement lifted decades-old sanctions on Tehran on the promise that it would roll back its nuclear programme considerably.
“At the meeting, which will be held at the request of Iran, foreign ministers of Iran and five world powers will discuss a proposed European package and measures to protect the agreement,” IRNA said.
In June, Iran banned the import of 1,339 products that it can produce itself as it prepares for sanctions that the United States has threatened to impose again.
