West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that she is not averse to working with the Congress to oust the Bharatiya Janata Party government at the Centre.

“My intention will be to unite with all,” said the Trinamool Congress president in an interview with India Today. “But it is not my decision alone. It has to be the decision of all the regional parties. I have no problem working with anybody as long as they are efficient, and their intentions, their philosophy, their ideology are clear.”

Asked about supporting the National Democratic Alliance, Banerjee said she “cannot support those who cause atrocities”. “We can only support a democratic system, the unity of this country, an economic agenda that is for the people.” She said the BJP-led government’s performance has been poor.

“From foreign policy to economic policy, they have failed in every department. They are behaving like a hundred Hitlers,” she said about the BJP government.

Banerjee said an Opposition alliance was possible. “Everybody has to work together,” she said. “I believe whoever is strong wherever, let them fight the election.”

On the matter of some Opposition parties wanting to forge a federal front without the Congress, she said the objective was to “work against the BJP together”. “If the Congress is strong and gets more seats in some places, let it take the lead,” she said. “If the regional parties are together somewhere else, they can be the decision-makers.”

On prime ministerial ambitions, Banerjee said she has “no intent”, however she said that she was a seasoned politician who has served as chief minister twice. “Who am I to rule out anything?”

Speaking about violence during the panchayat elections on May 14, Banerjee said West Bengal is a development-oriented state. “The BJP, with their fake news, is trying to give us a bad name.” At least 24 people were killed in violence during and after the elections. The Centre had sought a detailed report from the state on the violence.
