Two suspected militants were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Kundalan village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday, said the police.

The police said the suspected militants, identified as Sameer Ahmad Sheikh and Babar, had links to extremist group Jaish-e-Mohammed. Documents found on Babar’s body indicated that he was a commander of the militant group and of Pakistani origin, the police said.

The militants were reportedly the first to open fire at the security forces. A group of civilians then rushed towards the encounter site and started hurling stones at security personnel, who retaliated, the police said. One civilian died and 50 were wounded in the clashes, PTI reported citing police officials.

Two security force personnel were injured n the gunfight that broke out after a joint party of Army’s 34 Rashtriya Rifles, Special Operations Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force launched a search operation, Greater Kashmir reported.
