Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has written to Parliamentarians, asking them to avoid the “cycle of interruptions” in the House by staging disruptions, PTI reported. Her letter comes ahead of the start of the Monsoon Session next week. It will end on August 10.

The Budget Session was the least productive since 2000, according to PRS Legislative Research, with the Lok Sabha working for 21% of the scheduled time and the Rajya Sabha for 27%.

In her letter, Mahajan reminded the legislators of their “moral responsibility” and called on them to “introspect and decide about the way forward and the ideal image for our Parliament and democracy”.

The speaker said it was a priviledge to be a member of the House. “In return you may also wish to not only meet the expectations of your constituents and the nation but also make contribution to the progress of the country and strengthening of democracy,” she wrote.

“Can we justify our own conduct by advancing the argument of improper conduct and interruption of the business of the House by other parties in the past?” the speaker asked.
