The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday set September 10 as the deadline for the Tamil Nadu Crime Investigation Department to file its final chargesheet in alleged sex scandal at a college, PTI reported. A woman professor at Devanga Arts College in Virudhunagar district is accused of luring students to provide sexual favours to senior officials of the Madurai Kamraj University.

Justice GR Swaminathan also directed the lower court to complete the trial within six months of the chargesheet being filed.

The judge also dismissed the bail application of research assistant Karuppasamy, and said none of the accused should be granted bail till the trial is completed.

The scandal came to light in April after a telephonic conversation between Professor Nirmala Devi and a group of college girls was leaked online. She reportedly told investigating agencies that Karuppasamy and V Murugan, a senior faculty member, instigated her to trap the girls.

In the leaked audio clip, Devi claimed that she knew Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who is also the university’s chancellor. Purohit denied any link with Devi and ordered retired Indian Administrative Service officer R Santhanam to carry out an inquiry.
