One woman was killed and 13 others injured when they were shot at outside a restaurant in Toronto, Canada, on Sunday night, the police said. Toronto Police said the shooter was dead, while the condition of a “young girl” is said to be critical.

Emergency personnel were called to the spot, a busy neighbourhood in the city, around 10 pm on Sunday (7.30 am Monday Indian time).

A person who was at Christina’s Restaurant at the time of the incident told CBC News that she heard what sounded like 10 to 15 blasts of firecrackers. The locality has many restaurants, cafés and shops.

Those injured were taken to hospital. One of them was taken to Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, reported CTV News, quoting paramedics.

Toronto police chief Mark Saunders said the police had not confirmed the shooter’s motive and would not speculate on it until they had more information, reported The Guardian.

Mayor John Tory said the shooting was “evidence of a gun problem” in Toronto. “Guns are too readily available to too many people,” The Guardian quoted him as saying.
