Muzaffarpur rapes: Will consider CBI inquiry if Bihar so recommends, Rajnath Singh tells Lok Sabha

The Centre will consider an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation into the alleged rapes at a state-run shelter in Bihar’s Muzaffarpur if the state government makes such a recommendation, Home Minister Rajnath Singh told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Congress MP Ranjeet Ranjan had demanded a CBI inquiry in the case.
Earlier, Ranjan and Rashtriya Janata Dal MP JP Yadav had moved a notice for adjournment over the matter, ANI reported. On Monday, a girl at the shelter informed the police, investigating the alleged sexual abuse of dozens of inmates, about a fellow inmate’s body being buried in the premises.
The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 pm as Opposition MPs shouted slogans against black money in Swiss bank accounts. Finance Minister Piyush Goyal told the House that the amount deposited in Swiss National Bank has reduced by 80% in the first three years of the National Democratic Alliance government, ANI reported.
Loans and deposits of individual Indians in the bank decreased by 34.5% last year, Goyal claimed. He also said that Swiss authorities had shared details of more than 10,000 Indians since 2014.
In the Lok Sabha, Communist Party of India (Marxist) MP Mohammad Salim moved a zero hour notice over the violence in West Bengal and Tripura. The two states have witnessed a spate of mob lynchings and political violence in the two states.
Telugu Desam Party MPs, meanwhile, protested in Parliament, again demanding special category status for Andhra Pradesh. The Telugu Desam Party and other Opposition parties had moved a no-confidence motion the government last week. The government won the motion 325-126.
Trinamool Congress MPs also protested at the Parliament against the incidents of lynching in West Bengal.
Reports had speculated that the Congress was likely to move a privilege motion in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday against Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for “misleading the House” on the Rafale deal. Leader of the Congress in the House Mallikarjun Kharge said the party was consulting legal experts on whether to give notice against both or only the defence minister, reported The Indian Express.
The Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Bill, Homoeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill, and Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-third Amendment) Bill are listed for discussion and passage in the Lok Sabha.
In the Rajya Sabha, the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill and Motor Vehicles Amend Bill will be debated. The discussion on the non-implementation of the provisions of Andhra Pradesh Re-organization Act, 2014 is also scheduled.
