Former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif admitted to a hospital in Islamabad after his health deteriorates
On Sunday, Sharif complained of chest pain, following which doctors at the Rawalpindi jail examined him and recommended that he be hospitalised.
Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was admitted to a hospital in Islamabad after his health deteriorated in Rawalpindi’s Adyala jail on Sunday. Sharif was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in the national Capital after suffering from serious cardiac complications, AP reported.
Sharif is serving a 10-year jail term in a corruption case over his family’s purchase of luxury apartments in London. On Sunday, he complained of chest pain, following which doctors at the Rawalpindi jail examined him, Geo News reported. Sharif, the chief of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, has diabetes and underwent bypass surgery in 2016.
Punjab Home Minister Shaukat Javed said doctors had advised that Sharif be moved to a hospital after an electrocardiogram “showed variations”, PTI reported. “Sharif was in the hospital’s cardiac centre and his condition is stable,” Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences spokesperson Wasim Khwaja said. The institute’s cardiac ward has been designated a “sub-jail”.
Workers of Sharif’s party and Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf gathered at the hospital and chanted slogans after the former prime minister was admitted there. However, they were soon evicted by the police, and security was tightened.
The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, which became the single largest party in the elections to the Pakistan National Assembly last week, said on Twitter that it would pray for Sharif’s health, and criticised the protestors.
