A 35-year-old man in Punjab’s Kapurthala district set his family ablaze in the early hours of Thursday, The Indian Express reported. He later immolated himself as well.

Kulwinder Singh, who had been living in Jordan for the past one-and-a-half years, arrived home in Kala Sanghian village on Monday, after reportedly learning that a few men were blackmailing his wife and family members, said Superintendent of Police Jagjit Singh Saroya.

“He had seen some objectionable pictures of his wife with one of the youth due to which a fight broke out between the couple yesterday [Wednesday] night,” unidentified police officers told the newspaper.

Singh then set his wife Mandeep Kaur and their two children on fire. The children died on the spot while Kaur received more than 80% burns, PTI reported. She was taken to a hospital in Jalandhar, where she told the police that her husband had set her room on fire. She later succumbed to her injuries.

The police have registered a criminal case against four villagers – Balkar Singh, Gurpreet Singh alias Sunny, Satya Devi and Tirath Singh. Kulwinder Singh’s mother Mohinder Kaur said Sunny was the main accused.
