Two teenagers were arrested on Wednesday for assaulting and attempting to rob a 71-year-old Sikh man in California’s Manteca city on Monday. One of them is the son of a police chief.

This attack occurred just a week after a 50-year-old Sikh man was allegedly assaulted and racially abused in California’s Keyes. The victim, Surjit Singh Malhi, was struck with a stick and some other weapon on the head and body, and his pickup truck was painted with a white nationalist symbol and the words “Go back to ur country.” The police are investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Surveillance camera footage of Monday’s incident shows Sahib Singh Natt walking on a street at Greystone Park. Natt walked onto the street to avoid the attackers when they confronted him on the footpath.

The pair, however, followed the 71-year-old and one of them kicked him to the ground. The attacker, identified by police as Tyrone McAllister, and his companion then walk out of the camera’s frame, The San Francisco Chronicle reported. McAllister is next seen charging back and kicking Natt’s head and upper body several times.

Police Chief Darryl McAllister confirmed that Tyrone McAllister was his 18-year-old estranged son. “Chief McAllister’s status as a law enforcement leader has no bearing or relation to the case whatsoever, but he is devastated by how much the nature of his son’s actions are such a departure from everything he has stood for in his personal life and 37-year career of compassionate, engaging police work,” the Union City Police Department said in a press release.

Investigations Supervisor Sergeant Miller said the information provided by the public was instrumental in identifying the suspects and helped them arrest the two quickly, The Sacramento Bee reported. The investigators are checking if the incident was a hate crime.
