Four people, including two police officers, were killed in a shooting incident in Fredericton city in Canada’s New Brunswick province on Friday. Police said they have a suspect in custody who is being treated for serious injuries.

The shooting occurred in the Brookside Drive area of the city around 7 am (3.30 pm Indian time), according to CNN. “This is a developing situation and it is premature to determine whether there are any national security implications,” said Scott Bardsley, a spokesperson for Canadian Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale.

Fredericton police confirmed that there was no threat to public safety. “Police still have the crime scene contained, and will be working the investigation for some time,” police tweeted.

Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences. “Awful news coming out of Fredericton,” he said. “My heart goes out to everyone affected by this morning’s shooting. We’re following the situation closely.”

In July, two people died and 13 people were injured when they were shot at outside a restaurant in Toronto. The attacker also died in the incident. In the wake of the shooting, federal officials said they were considering a ban on handguns.
