More than 100 publications in the United States have agreed to write and publish editorials on August 16 denouncing President Donald Trump’s ‘‘dirty war against the free press”. The campaign was coordinated by The Boston Globe newspaper. Trump has repeatedly referred to the media as the enemy of the American people.

“We are not the enemy of the people,’’ said Marjorie Pritchard, deputy managing editor for the editorial page of The Boston Globe. The editorials will focus on the government’s alleged assault on the press. “The response has been overwhelming,” Pritchard added. “We have some big newspapers, but the majority are from smaller markets, all enthusiastic about standing up to Trump’s assault on journalism.”

Each editorial will differ as the impact of “the assault on the press” has varied across the country. Pritchard said while the views would differ in each editorial, the sentiment would emphasise the importance of a free and independent media.
