At least nine people died and 15 were injured in a fire that engulfed a hospital in Taiwan on Monday morning, Reuters reported. Officials are trying to ascertain what triggered the blaze on the seventh floor of the hospital in New Taipei City.

The fire has since been extinguished. Premier William Lai said the Health Ministry was monitoring rescue efforts. Media footage showed medical workers taking out patients on wheelchairs and stretchers and into ambulances.

Lai said the incident has served as a learning opportunity for the administration. “In the event of a repeat incident, it will help to limit the impact to a minimum,” he said.

President Tsai Ing-wen, who was in the United States, expressed her grief for the victims and hoped for a speedy recovery for the injured.
