Pakistan: Three killed and more than 35 injured in Independence Day celebrations
Most of the injuries were caused by aerial firing and firework explosions.
At least three people were killed and more than 35 injured in incidents of aerial firing and firework displays during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday, reports said on Wednesday.
According to the police, many people thronged the roads of Karachi on Monday night, firing weapons in the air and bursting firecrackers, reported The News. A 22-year-old man, Salman Shakoor, was hit in his face by a firecracker in North Nazimabad area, and died during treatment. A 21-year-old was also injured in the incident.
In a separate incident, a 26-year-old man, Sarmad Shabbir, died after a firecracker hit him on the head, due to firework explosions. Shabbir had come from Dubai on a holiday, reported The Express Tribune. A third person was killed in Rawalpindi in celebratory firing, reported Dunya News, while eight others were wounded in different areas of the city.
In Pakistan, cases of aerial firing are punishable with three months in jail, and an undisclosed fine.
