After Mughalsarai railway station, Uttar Pradesh proposes to rename three airports
The state wants to rename Bareilly airport after Nath Nagri, Kanpur’s after freedom fighter Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi and Agra airport after Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Uttar Pradesh government has proposed to rename three defence airports in Bareilly, Kanpur and Agra, PTI reported on Wednesday. The announcement comes months after it renamed the iconic Mughalsarai Railway Station as the Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay junction, after the Jan Sangh leader.
A spokesperson said the state’s civil aviation department is discussing the possibility with the Airports Authority of India and other authorities concerned. The proposal suggests renaming the Bareilly airport after ‘Nath Nagri’, which is believed to be the mythological name of the city. Chief Minister Adityanath is a member of the Nath sect.
The proposal also recommends the renaming of Kanpur’s Chakeri airport after freedom fighter Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi and the Agra airport after Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
The chief minister had renamed the civil terminal of the Indian Air Force’s Gorakhpur airport after the founder of the sect, Maha Yogi Gorakhnath.
Uttar Pradesh Civil Aviation Minister Nand Gopal Nandi told the news agency that the renaming is long overdue. “We have reached out to the Centre to get the airports renamed,” Nandi said. “A meeting with the union ministry of Civil Aviation is expected soon.”
