An Indian soldier was killed in an encounter with suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday, reported PTI. The jawan, identified as Ram Babu Sahai, died at the Army’s 92 Base Hospital.

The incident took place at Kachlu village where the army’s 32 Rashtriya Rifles launched a cordon-and-search operation early in the morning, according to Greater Kashmir. The suspected militants opened fire at the security forces and started a gunfight, and later fled, a police official said. Police were carrying out searches to trace them.

The operation was called off after security forces found no incriminating material, said the official.

Woman shot dead in Pulwama

A woman was shot dead by suspected militants in Pulwama district’s Drubgam on Friday, said a police officer. She was identified as Shameema Bano, a resident of Quil, reported PTI. She was taken to a hospital where doctors declared her dead, said the official.

A police spokesperson said that militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen were behind the murder.

Four civilians injured in grenade attack

In Pulwama district’s Awantipora, four civilians were injured in a grenade attack on Friday, reported PTI. Suspected militants threw a grenade at the main gate of the district police office. A police officer said that the bomb exploded by the road and injured four people, one of whom is reportedly in a criticial situation.

Late on Thursday, the Pakistan Army had allegedly violated ceasefire by firing at the Indian Army’s forward posts along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district. The troops guarding the border retaliated and the firing went on till 5 am, officials said.
