10.42 pm: Mumbai registers 1,142 new coronavirus cases and 35 deaths on Tuesday, ANI reports. With this, the city’s tally rises to 1,46,947, including 7,690 deaths.

2.43 pm: Meghalaya’s coronavirus tally rises to 2,433 on Tuesday as it reports 65 new cases, according to PTI. The state’s toll rises by two to 12.

2.24 pm: Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro on Monday said that nobody in his country will be forced to get the vaccine against the pandemic once it is developed, according to Reuters.

2.20 pm: Indian scientists have found a higher association between asymptomatic coronavirus cases and viral load, PTI reports. The researchers, including those from the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics in Hyderabad, conducted the study on over 200 patients.

“It is important to consider the possibility of infection from asymptomatic patients, presumably harbouring good immunity, spreading into individuals possessing not so robust immunity leading to increased morbidity and mortality,” the researchers say.

2.06 pm: The third sero-survey in Delhi will begin on Tuesday, says Health Minister Satyendar Jain, according to ANI. “This time it is being done on a ward-wise basis,” he says. “The sample size is 17,000. Sampling will be complete within a week and it will take 7-10 days after that to process it.”

11.37 am: A study of 122 sanitisers in Mumbai and Thane has found that 50% of them are adulterated, Mumbai Mirror reports. Of them, 4% contain toxic methanol, which can have such serious side effects as causing blindness.

11.29 am: US President Donald Trump has announced that the vaccine for coronavirus being developed by AstraZeneca has reached phase three clinical trials in the country, and is very close to final approval, PTI reports. “That’s joining another group of vaccines that are very close to the end, and hopefully, approval,” he adds. Moderna Inc and Pfizer Inc. also have vaccines in Phase 3 clinical trials.

11.19 am: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres claims that the coronavirus pandemic has increased inequality between men and women and reversed decades of limited progress on gender equality, AP reports. Guterres says that women have been on the front lines of the response since the pandemic began, but only a small percentage of them are in decision-making roles as healthcare workers.

11.08 am: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi has asked the Uttar Pradesh government to provide insurance cover to journalists during the coronavirus pandemic, PTI reports. Her appeal to the government came after Neelanshu Shukla, a young journalist, died of the coronavirus.

11 am: The Krishna Raja Market and Kalasipalyam Market have reopened in Bengaluru, ANI reports. Many cases of the coronavirus had been linked to these markets, following which the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike shut them down for 15 days.

  • India’s coronavirus tally crossed the 36 lakh-mark to reach 36,21,245 after 78,512 new cases were registered in 24 hours on Monday. The toll rose by 971 to 64,469. India has 7,81,975 active cases now while the number of recovered cases reached 27,74,801.  
  • Andhra Pradesh reported over 10,000 cases for the sixth consecutive day on Monday. The state reported 10,004 new cases, taking its tally to 4,34,771. The state’s toll rose by 85 to 3,969. Andhra Pradesh had overtaken Tamil Nadu as India’s second worst-hit state on Sunday. Tamil Nadu’s tally, meanwhile, stood at 4,28,041 on Monday. Its toll reached 7,322. 
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation extended the suspension of scheduled international flights till September 30, PTI reported. “However, international scheduled flights may be allowed on selected routes by the competent authority on a case-to-case basis,” the DGCA circular said. The flights were first barred on March 23.
  • The Supreme Court has issued standard operating procedure for the resumption of physical hearings. Initial hearings will commence in three courtrooms and the same may be increased or decreased as per situation. Only a limited number of advocates/parties in person shall be allowed to enter the courtroom at any given time. Special hearing passes will be issued by the registry for limited entry of counsels/parties after thermal screening. 
  • Maharashtra announced several relaxations in coronavirus restrictions, allowing hotels and some government offices to operate with 100% capacity. Metro services, malls, theaters and educational institutions will however stay shut. Private offices in the state can operate with a 30% capacity, up from the 10% limit. 
  • Globally, the coronavirus has infected more than 2.52 crore people and killed over 8.46 lakh others, according to the Johns Hopkins University’s tracker. Over 1.66 crore people across the world have recovered from the infection.
