Path to climate ambition must be paved with equity, says India
Member of Parliament SP Muddahanumegowda said the burden of sustainability cannot be placed solely on developing countries.
India has warned that global efforts to arrive at a climate deal in Paris later this year will not succeed if there are persistent attempts to dislodge the balance of responsibilities between developed and developing countries. Visiting Member of Parliament from India, S P Muddahanumegowda, said at a United Nations meeting on sustainable development on Monday that “the path to climate ambition must be paved with equity”. He added that India was not part of the climate change problem, but has every intention to be a part of the solution, reported the Press Trust of India.
Muddahanumegowda requested developed countries to “step up to the plate and fulfill their responsibilities in good faith", saying that the burden of sustainability cannot be placed solely on developing countries. Paris is scheduled to host the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change from November 30 to December 11.
