Sourav Ganguly stable and likely to be discharged on Wednesday, another angioplasty deferred
On Saturday, the batting great was taken to the hospital following complaints of chest pain.
Board of Control for Cricket in India president and former national captain Sourav Ganguly, who underwent angioplasty after a mild heart attack, is stable and is likely to be discharged on Wednesday, hospital authorities said on Monday.
The 48-year-old was diagnosed with three blocked coronary arteries on Saturday, following which a stent was inserted in one to remove the blockage, reported PTI. He suffered from chest discomfort while exercising on his tread-mill at a home gym, the hospital had informed.
A nine-member board of senior doctors discussed Ganguly’s condition on Monday and reached a consensus that though necessary, angioplasty can be deferred to a later date as he is stable, Woodlands Hospital MD and CEO Dr Rupali Basu was quoted as saying by a PTI report.
Cardiologists Dr Devi Shetty and Dr RK Panda participated in the meeting through a virtual platform while another expert from the US was part of the discussion over the phone, she said.
“The medical board came to a consensus that deferring angioplasty for now is a safer option as Mr Ganguly is stable, does not have chest pain and is on optimal management,” Basu, a member of the board, said.
“The angioplasty will take place for sure in a few days or weeks. He will be discharged most probably the day after tomorrow,” she added.
The cricket great’s family members were present during the meeting and were explained about the disease process and further therapeutic plan, the report added.
Doctors will monitor his health and take appropriate measures at his home after he is discharged, Basu said. Shetty is likely to visit Ganguly on Tuesday for another meeting for the next course of treatment, she added.
“Ganguly’s coronary angiography was done at 3 pm and his echocardiography will be repeated [on Monday],” a bulletin, issued by the private hospital where he is admitted, said late on Sunday night, adding that his blood pressure is 110/80 and oxygen saturation level is 98%.
A hospital spokesperson had said the medical board is not thinking about the option of bypass surgery, according to the PTI report.
Meanwhile, fans of the former cricketer were seen holding posters that read ‘Come back dada’ outside the hospital, which saw a beeline of visitors like Saturday, an earlier PTI report said.
On Saturday, the batting great was taken to the hospital following complaints of chest pain during his exercise session. Ganguly, who captained India till 2005 during which he led the team to a World Cup final, took over as the BCCI president in October 2019.
