The sixth annual Kabaddi World Cup, which was to be held in Punjab in November, has been cancelled as unrest continued in the state over the desecration of the Sikh holy book Guru Granth Sahib. Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal made the announcement on Tuesday, the Chandigarh Tribune reported. Badal, who is also the state sports minister, said it would be inappropriate to host the tournament while thousands of Sikhs were grieving and protesting against the incident.

On Tuesday, paramilitary forces were called in to ease the situation in Ludhiana, Amritsar and Jalandar, reported the Times of India. Clashes between protesters and the police have caused shutdowns in several parts of the state. The police on Monday arrested three people for the desecration.
