The Golden Raspberry Awards or the Razzies, set up 36 years ago as a spoof of the Oscars by publicist John JB Wilson, handed out its stink bombs on February 27. Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey might have conquered the box office around the world, but it didn’t impress the 900-plus Razzie jurors. The movie tied for Worst Picture with the superhero fantasy adventure Fantastic Four and also bagged Worst Actor (Jamie Dornan), Worst Actress (Dakota Johnson), Worst screen combo (Dornan-Johnson) and Worst screenplay.
The Razzie jurors do not seem to have watched very much else during 2015. Fantastic Four was the second most despised film of the night – it was named Worst remake rip/off or sequel, while Josh Trank was declared Worst director.
Eddie Redmayne, nominated for an Oscar in the Actor in a Leading Role (Male) for The Danish Girl at the Oscars, won the Worst supporting actor trophy for Jupiter Ascending. The female equivalent was Kaley Cuoco, who won for both Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip as well as The Wedding Ringer.
There was something resembling love in an evening aimed at hitting soft targets. Sylvester Stallone won the “Razzie Redeemer Award” for his role as coach Rocky Balboa in Ryan Coogler’s Creed. Stallone is also tipped to pick up an Oscar for Actor in a Supporting Role (Male) for Creed, in which he coaches the son of his best friend (played by Michael B Jordan) to victory.
