Free State of Jones Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit) directs a new American Civil War-era drama set in Jones County, Mississippi. Matthew McConaughey plays a fictional version of Newton Knight, who led a rebellion against the Confederate states that had seceded from the American Union in the mid-nineteenth century. In the movie, Knight galvanises the community against the Confederates and establishes a mixed-race Utopia in Jones County.
