The only Hindi movie for July 29 that seems to be worth the trek is Dishoom. Meanwhile, Hollywood has lots in store.
Dishoom After the forgettable Desi Boyz (2011), Rohit Dhawan is back with a buddy cop action movie set in the Middle East. Two police officers played by John Abraham and Varun Dhawan set out to find India’s missing top batsman (Saqib Saleem). Jacqueline Fernandez steps in to provide glamour as fists fly and vehicles explode, and even Parineeta Chopra shows up for an item song. Then there is Hindi cinema’s own mystery man, Akshaye Khanna, who was last seen in Gali Gali Chor Hai in 2012, and a cameo by Akshay Kumar.
Ghostbusters The all-women remake of the popular 1984 comedy is finally here. Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy) directs Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones as paranormal spirit hunters. The remake has divided audiences into male (hate it) and female (love it). Leslie Jones had to get off Twitter after vicious attacks on her race and her acting style, and perhaps few Hollywood movies have irritated – or excited – audiences more than this one.
The BFG Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of one of Roald Dahl’s best-loved children’s novels is a rare domestic flop for the prolific Hollywood hitmaker. The 1982 book is about the orphan Sophie, who gets scooped up by the Big Friendly Giant when she catches him releasing dreams one night. As they try to defeat dastardly human-eating giants whom the BFG loathes, they end up seeking an audience with the Queen of England. The movie stars Mark Rylance as the BFG, Ruby Barnhill as Sophie, and Penelope Wilton as the Queen. The Hindi dubbed version features the voices of Amitabh Bachchan, Parineeti Chopra and Gulshan Grover.
Bad Moms Many women with wards will identify with the adventures of these madcap maters. Amy (Mila Kunis) decides to take off with her friends (Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hann) on a wild adventure, earning the disapproval of PTA poster girl Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate).
Murder Madhuri The week’s B-grade dose is being delivered by a thriller based on the 2012 gang-rape in Delhi. Ali Ahmed Oosman directs Jiiya Khan, Deepshikha, Sharat Saxena and Raza Murad, among others.
