Jonathan Pryce, best known for playing The High Sparrow in Game of Thrones, will play the lead role as Francis Pope in the upcoming Netflix movie The Pope, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Constant Gardener), the film will be an adaptation of playwright Anthony McCarten’s drama. The production features Anthony Hopkins play Pope Benedict, Francis’ predecessor. The film will follow the resignation of Pope Benedict and the subsequent election of Argentinian Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, the first non-European Pope in around 13 centuries.
The film’s production is set to begin in November in Argentina.
