Mrighdeep Singh Lamba’s Fukrey was one of 2013s sleeper hits. Made with a host of fresh faces at the time plus Richa Chadda, who was fresh from the success of Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), the modestly budgeted comedy caper went on to mint money. The movie’s success put the spotlight on its song Ambarsariya, sung by Sona Mahapatra and composed by Ram Sampath. The song became a smash hit. Unplugged and cover versions over the years lengthened its shelf life.
The sequel Fukrey Returns is scheduled for a December 8 release. Its soundtrack, clocking at 26 minutes and consisting of eight songs, is a brisk, light affair. In the midst of fast-paced tracks, laced with the trendiest trappings of club music, lies Ishq De Fanniyar, which is pegged to repeat the success of Ambarsariya.
Composed by Sharib-Toshi, the romantic song has two versions: one, sung by the composers themselves, and another by rising playback singer Jyotica Tangri. The melody is strong, the instrumentation and production light, and the singers have an easy job carrying forward a good composition.
Tangri sings her version with gusto, while Shabir and Toshi’s version is comparatively subdued. Ishq De Fanniyar has a good chance to make it to year-end charts and beyond in a year where Bollywood has seen more musical duds than successes.
