After biopics on popular leaders NT Rama Rao, Jayalalithaa and Bal Thackeray, a movie based on the life of former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy is in the works, Firstpost reported. The film will be directed by Mahi Raghav.
YSR, as the leader was widely known, died in a helicopter crash in September 2009 during his second term as Andhra Pradesh chief minister.
The biopic, titled Yatra, will reportedly focus on the period between 1999 and 2004, particularly Reddy’s 1,475 km foot yatra across Andhra Pradesh, which culminated in the Congress leader’s victory in the 2004 Assembly elections. “We want to showcase the various challenges that YSR faced during this period, including a financial crisis of sorts, and how he emerged winner,” Raghav told Times of India.
The movie will be produced by Vijay Chilla and Shashi Devireddy, who had also bankrolled Raghav’s last release, the Telugu horror-comedy Anando Brahma (2017).
While there has been speculation that Malayalam actor Mammootty or Telugu star Nagarjuna will play Reddy, Raghav said that they have not finalised the cast. “The script work is almost done,” Raghav told Firstpost. “We haven’t finalised the casting yet. We are in the process of approaching a few actors and this might take a few more weeks before we can make an official announcement.”
