The trailer of the second season of National Geographic’s Genius series features an unabashed and unapologetic Antonio Banderas as the celebrated artist Pablo Picasso. Created by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer, Genuis: Picasso traces the Spanish painter’s evolution over almost seven decades. Newcomer Alex Rich plays the young Picasso.

Genius: Picasso will be premiered on National Geographic on April 24.

The trailer plays up Picasso’s famously colourful private life, even as it sketches a portrait of his illustrious career. Banderas is contemplative and pensive as an older Picasso: “The only way to be a true artist is to work day and night. Lose yourself in it completely.”

The first season of National Geographic’s anthology series, which starred Geoffrey Rush as Albert Einstein, was nominated for Emmy Awards in 10 categories.
