Clad in a blue turban with his hands folded, Anupam Kher appears uncharacteristically taciturn as former prime minister Manmohan Singh in the first look of The Accidental Prime Minister. Directed by Vijay Gutte, the movie is based on policy analyst Sanjaya Baru’s 2014 memoir of the same name.
Baru was Singh’s media advisor between May 2004 and August 2008. He is critical of Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister in his book, claiming that Singh had been “defanged” by the Congress, with all important decisions being taken by Sonia Gandhi, who was the party president at the time.
Kher told The Indian Express that playing the role of a contemporary personality like Singh would be challenging. “He is part of a 24/7 media era where world knows his persona minutely. I have been internalising this character for the past few months. I look forward to translating that effort into cinematic reality,” he said.
The film will feature Lipstick Under My Burkha actor Aahana Kumra as Priyanka Gandhi and Akshaye Khanna, who reportedly plays Baru. The film shoot is reportedly underway in London. The scheduled release date is December 21.
