In Deb Medhekar’s Bioscopewala, Danny Denzongpa stars as the titular character, a man who makes a living by letting customers peek into his portable movie projector. He strikes up a friendship with a young girl (played by Geetanjali Thapa as an adult), but at some point, loses touch with her completely. The film also stars Adil Hussain, Tisca Chopra and Sunil Doshi, and is scheduled to be released on May 25.

Bioscopewala is the latest adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s 1892 short story Kabuliwala, about the bond between a Pashtun trader of dry fruits from Kabul and Mini, a young girl in Kolkata who reminds him of his daughter.

The story was first adapted by Tapan Sinha in Bengali in 1957. Chhabi Biswas played Rahmat. In 1961, Balraj Sahni played the lead role in the Hindi adaptation directed by Hemen Gupta. Another adaptation was for an episode for the 2015 television series Stories by Rabindranath Tagore. Mushtaq Kak plays the protagonist.
