Whiplash actor Miles Teller has been tapped to star in Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick, the upcoming sequel to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun, Variety reported. Teller will reportedly play Bradley Bradshaw, the son of the Top Gun character Nick ‘Goose’ Bradshaw, who was the co-pilot and friend of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) in Tony Scott’s 1980s hit.

In Top Gun: Maverick, Pete will reportedly be Bradely’s mentor. The new film will be set in a world of drone technology and latest fighter aircraft, and will look at the end of the era of dogfighting – aerial battle between aircraft at close range.

Besides Cruise, Val Kilmer will return to play Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazansky. The sequel is scheduled for a July 12, 2019, release.

Top Gun, one of Cruise’s first blockbusters, is about an arrogant pilot training at the United States Navy’s elite fighter weapons school. Alongside competing with the best in his class, Pete gets lessons in life and love from his instructor (Kelly McGillis). Anthony Edwards plays Pete’s wingman and friend Goose, who dies in an accident.

Kosinski has previously directed the science-fiction films Tron: Legacy (2010) and Oblivion (2013), which starred Cruise.
