Doctor Who is not new. Sure, it’s a recent arrival on Indian TV (FX Torrents), but the series first aired in 1963 before being revived in 2005. Christopher Eccleston starred as the Ninth Doctor, and the role has since been regenerated with the incredible David Tennant, the adorable Matt Smith, and most recently, the very Scottish, very blunt Peter Capaldi.

But who is the Doctor, you ask?

The Doctor is a time traveller, the last surviving Time Lord from the lost planet of Gallifrey, who travels in time and space in his Tardis, a spaceship that looks like a Blue Police Phone Box from the 1960s. It’s a beautiful, often unreliable, but always a loyal living thing, that’s much much bigger inside than outside – basic Time Lord science.

The Doctor has travelled to distant galaxies and forgotten centuries, saving innumerable lives. He was there when Vesuvius swallowed Pompeii, and when Agatha Christie got the inspiration for Murder on the Orient Express. He fought dinosaurs on a spaceship with Queen Nefertiti, and wears a coat given to him by Janis Joplin.

A cult television show and an essential part of British pop culture, Doctor Who is a series everyone on earth must be watching. Because honestly, you won’t want to waste your time thinking when a blue telephone kiosk appears in your room, asking to whisk you away to the wonders of the universe, time, and space.
