Listen to a crowd of thousands singing their hearts out with ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash in Mumbai
On Saturday ex-Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash performed to a packed audience in Mumbai. The legendary guitarist is in India with his current band The Conspirators, fronted by former Alter Bridge vocalist Miles Kennedy. When Sweet Child O' Mine, a Guns N' Roses favourite came on, the crowd broke into an impromptu chant, drowning out the voices of the band's vocalist. Starting at about the 40 second mark in the video above, the crowd carried the song through to it end, staying surprisingly in harmony.
India has been accused of hosting ageing musicians who will not get large audiences elsewhere. That may be the case, but Indians also love their rock 'n' roll anthems. Sweet Child O' Mine, which was released in 1987, still has avid fans with continuing echoes across college hostel corridors. That may explain why Slash at 50 years old can still attract crowds in an India that's predominantly young.
After the concert an enthusiastic Slash tweeted: “Mumbai fu***ng rocked our asses off! Unbelievably passionate and enthusiastic crowd. Truly great first time visit/show!”
A little-known ironic fact is that Sweet Child O'Mine is Slash's least favourite song. In a 2014 interview to a radio show he said, "I didn't hate it, but I wasn't fond of Sweet Child O' Mine." He added, "It just did not fit in with the rest of our, sort of, schtick. And, of course, it would be the biggest hit we ever had."
This bird's eye view video has been put up by the YouTube user Carlton and The Saints, which is also a local Mumbai Rock band.
The band is due to play in Bangalore next on November 14. This concert is part of MTV Indies Xtreme – a rock music and adventure sports festival.
