Indian waters and beaches are popular for many things. Surfing isn’t really one of them – so far. The water sport’s growing acceptance in the country is reflected in the India Surf Festival, whose fourth edition, held at the Ramachandi beach in Odisha in February, attracted strong crowds.

Held over three days, the festival included stand-up paddling, freestyle surfing, kitesurfing and longboarding. Its major attraction, though, were the Asian Surfing Championships. Twenty-four surfers took part in the contest, riding waves three feet to head high in the Bay of Bengal.

The festival was curated by Bengaluru-based artist Vinay Pateel, who has been the job since its second edition. The organisers promise to bring a more thrilling edition next year at another beach in Puri next year. Meanwhile, watch the highlights of this year’s festival in this video.
