On November 7 the World Health Organisation declared the Sierra Leone free of ebola after no new cases were reported for a period of 42 days.

Instead of a collective sigh of relief, doctors, medical workers and citizens decided to lead carnival-like celebrations in the capital city of Freetown. Some of it to the accompaniment of local rapper Block Jones's song Bye Bye Ebola.

The video above shows health workers, policemen, survivors, children and other people of Freetown performing the Azonto, among other dances, to this infectious tune. Jones sings, "Ebola passed by the nation, it caused some frustration."

It caused more than some frustration. The deadly disease struck Sierra Leone in May 2014 and claimed upto 3,589 lives according to official estimates, with a total of 8,704 people infected. The disease ravaged the country, wiping out entire families and communities.

Neighbouring Guinea, the country where the virus spread from, will also be declared free of the virus if no new cases are reported in the next six weeks. Till that happens, the threat of the virus still looms over Sierra Leone, which is now in a new phase of 90 days of enhanced surveillance, to continue till February 5, 2016.
