When bans in India have become an integral of popular culture, they too can be turned into kitsch. And who better to do it than Remo Fernandes? The singer and songwriter wants you to ditch the dougie and "do the ban."

The ban is an easy dance step to master. “Come and X your hands/And do the ban,” Remo instructs in his latest track, taking shots at the many bans imposed this year on subjects as wide ranging as Fifty Shades of Grey to the Messenger of God, from beef to Maggi and porn to the use of the word lesbian. Through the cheeky video, Fernandes takes shots at how kissing in public is banned but urinating is not.

The Padma Shri awardee was quite rankled with a ban on kissing in public in the Goan village of Salvador do Mundo. In March this year, the singer had made an appeal against the ban on Facebook. “I think every right-thinking couple in the village should come out to the village square on a given day and protest by doing an en masse kissing in public,” it read.

Briefly a member of the Aam Aadmi Party, the singer quit politics in March, saying it affected his music.
