Every year it seems like California's wild fires get worse. The stubborn drought has meant much more in the way of flammable material through the countryside and the dry winds that blow into the American state only fan the flames even further. The brush fires can be massive and sometimes genuinely terrifying.

This video, shot by Dutch citizen Maakie Maks as she was visiting Los Angeles, gives you an idea of the view as their car approached the Solimar fire which turned into a 1,200 acre blaze overnight. The fire reportedly began after heavy winds caused a powerline to topple, sparking flames that the wind then helped spread.

The fire prompted evacuations in the neighbourhood and needed more than 600 firefighters to handle it, with about 70% of the fire contained as of Sunday, according to officials. Maks' video shows cars travelling through an area that looks like something right out of a disaster movie, with flames bursting out onto the road.

California's familiarity with brush fires meant few have actually been injured by the massive blaze, but the increasing frequency of the wildfires means the state is still dealing with massive property damage even if it has learnt to keep people safe.
