Video: South Africa's cricket team performs a cover of Pitbull's 'Fireball' and it's a damp squib
The Proteas would do well to look for other sources of inspiration.
There are a great many things AB de Villiers is magnificent at. Sadly, dancing to the beats of a rap song are not one of them.
American rapper Pitbull's 2014 hit Fireball is a catchy dance song at best. An inspirational sporting anthem, not. So why the South African cricket team decided to choose this song as their anthem for their forthcoming World Twenty20 campaign in India is a question best answered by only them.
But the video takes the cake. Their Twenty20 captain Faf du Plessis shows up dressed in a leopard-print tee with dark sunglasses, clutching a mike and lip-syncing the lyrics. Other members of the South African team, including David Miller, Kagiso Rabada and Farhaan Behardien gamely shake their hands and legs a bit, gamely trying to pull off a few dance moves.
Even Dale Steyn is not spared. South Africa's premier fast bowler, who can scare a batsman by just a single glare, loses much of his menace as he pulls of a little jig in front of what seems, a bathroom mirror.
Perhaps, the song has something to with the official hashtag the team has hit on: #ProteaFire. Unfortunately, this fireball has turned out to be quite a damp squib.
