Watch: Why is this video of a woman wearing a Chewbacca mask getting millions of views?
"Oh, I am such a happy Chewbacca!"
That is all the internet wants to see. Pure. Unadulterated. Joy.
A few years ago, reality television star Kim Kardashian famously broke the internet. The previous record holder for most views for a Facebook live video was this one of an exploding watermelon that got over 10 million views.
But sometimes, it is just the simple things that go viral and break records.
The video above has become the most seen Facebook live video of all time and has garnered close to 140 million views since it was uploaded on Saturday. Titled It's the simple joys, the video features Candace Payne, a stay-at-home mother of two from Texas, and a braying Chewbacca mask.
She has a few minutes to spare in her car before she gets home and the mask is taken over by her children. So, in a live stream, Payne decides to show her friends the birthday gift she brought for herself. With the mask on, every time she opens her mouth, it makes Chewbacca's guttural bray.
The ridiculousness of the mask coupled with the braying sound means Payne cannot control herself and bursts into peals of laughter. And that is what she does for two minutes straight.
"I could see myself in the camera, and I saw this view and I could not stop laughing at how gleeful Chewbacca looked. I thought, Chewbacca's found his joy! When you are a stay-at-home mom, every now and then you just need an adult conversation. Like please someone else out there in the universe or internet tell me I'm not the only one who finds this funny," she told the BBC.
The video has fast become a pop culture phenomenon. Payne has appeared in a multitude of talk shows, met JJ Abrams, the director of Star Wars: A Force Awakens, has received praise from Peter Mayhew, the man behind Chewbacca, in a Reddit post, and has led to the mask in the video being completely sold out.
