It's been a weird two days in France. Two teams who received some flak after their opening games (Belgium and Spain) bounced back with exhilarating displays to cock a thumb at their critics while for another (Portugal), the underwhelming performances continued.

For Spain, the highlight of their 3-0 dismantling of Turkey on Friday night was their perfect demonstrating of the core Spanish philosophy of "tiki-taka". For their third goal, they strung together 21 passes, baiting the Turkish defenders relentlessly before that genius Andre Iniesta produced a sublime through ball that ended with Alvaro Morata scoring.

But Belgium, smarting from their defeat against Italy in their first match, went one better. Against the Republic of Ireland, they brought their own version of tiki-taka to the fore, putting together 28 passes before Axel Witsel made it 2-0 for Belgium.

Over at the Parc des Princes though, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal's bad form continued against Austria. The Real Madrid champion, who faced much lampooning after declaring that Iceland had a "small mentality", missed a penalty and even had a goal disallowed as his team limped to a 0-0 draw against Austria.
