Sometimes viral videos on the internet do make a difference. In July, news broke that the biggest viral trend of 2014 – the ALS ice bucket challenge – had led to a breakthrough in medical research. Now, a new heartwarming viral story can be added to the mix.

He's been a singer all his life. He's called the Songaminute Man because of his ability to recite so many tracks from memory. But unfortunately Ted McDermott can no longer recognise his own family on most days.

The 79-year-old was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2013, but has unexpectedly found viral fame of late. Many millions of people have seen him sing the Italian pop song Quanda Quanda. What started as a one-off thing has expanded into a YouTube channel and Facebook page with still more videos of Dermott and his son doing their version of carpool karaoke. In the process, £30,000 has been raised for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Here's McDermott's covers of other pop classics.
