As tempting and fascinating space travel sounds, did you know that there are several adverse effects astronauts must cope with thanks to their time in space?

A new video by Life Noggin looks at the potential side-effects. Although humans have been exploring space for over 50 years, there is a thirst for more, with growing talk of sending humans to Mars in the near future.

Many would list the weakening of bones as a common consequence of space travel. Within a span of just one month, an astronaut’s bone density can decrease as much as one percent, which can cause fractures once they return to Earth.

There’s also a major risk of astronauts losing muscle due to lack of use in space. Exercise isn’t enough, with researchers indicating that muscle volume and strength still decreases.

There are many more grim side-effects, such as vision problems and heart issues, which could affect blood pressure and make you dizzy after standing up. Researchers are now on track to identify more side-effects, as well as ways to prevent them, while also studying possible genetic changes in space.
